Manor Farm Cottage is a spacious family home built on 3 acres of land on a quiet residential road. The unit is registered for 4 placements for young people aged between 11 and 18. The house comprises of a large lounge with TV area and pool table, a second lounge for play, reading and quiet activities and an art room. The kitchen and dining room tend to be the hub of the house and the place where the young people like to hold the weekly house meetings. During the summer the young people choose to spend much of their time in the large garden, on bikes and skateboards, playing badminton and volleyball and enjoying barbeques.
The home is situated close to a local nature reserve where the young people go for walks and bike rides around the lakes. The train station is within walking distance from where the young people can gain access to Southampton and Portsmouth city centres.
The young people have access to the internet at the IT Suite in the adjacent school building and are supervised where they are also able to use a Wii Games Console. External activities outside of the unit are always promoted and the young people are encouraged to try a variety of pursuits to find something that suits them. These can range from structured clubs to visits to local tennis courts, golf ranges and fishing lakes.
Each of the residents is given the opportunity to choose how their bedrooms is decorated and is encouraged to get involved in the process to develop a sense of ownership. The young people are also encouraged to contribute to the house in the form of art work and many of the youngsters have left their mark on the house in a positive way by being involved in art projects.
One of the bedrooms is within an independent annex, connected to the house but with a separate lounge, kitchen, bathroom and front door. This can be used to enable young people to develop independent living skills before moving out of the unit.
