Overview of Process
At Fairways Care we view assessment as a continuous process in foster care. The “assessment” starts with the initial home visit, completion of our application form and continues until a decision regarding approval is made. Those who become foster carers will expect to have their skills and performance assessed right throughout their fostering careers. We will undertake formal reviews of foster carers on an annual basis to assess if their approval should be renewed.
we believe the process of information gathering must be rigorous and structured, which will ensure that all the information is collated accurately. Any aspects that give rise to doubts about suitability will be pursued and resolved. Without exception, approval will not be given if doubts concerning safety cannot be resolved satisfactorily.
Prospective carers will be informed from the outset that they are being formally assessed by the independent assessor, rather than simply participating in exchanging information. This enables the prospective carers themselves to judge whether they want to take on the task. They will be fully informed about enquiries/investigations to enable a clear understanding of the selection/assessment process and the need for visits and undertaken checks, and time scales will be fully explained.
Applicants should be made aware and understand why members of the household and extended family and significant others, as a whole, are being assessed in order to ensure it is a suitable place for a child/Young Person to be placed in. There will be a clear understanding that no one has a right to foster. It is our unequivocal duty to find the most suitable foster placements for the child/ young person, and all fostering decisions will be centred exclusively on the interests of the child/ young person needing our services.
We accept that applicants have to divulge personal details and information and that other household/family/friends are exposed to close scrutiny. We will treat all applicants with consideration throughout the process and ensure that they have confidence in the fact that they are being assessed in a fair, objective manner.
All applicants will have a clear outline of our selection criteria, of time scales, and the feedback they can expect.
Independant Assessors
Independent assessors will complete all of the assessments. They will be appropriately qualified social workers that can demonstrate and evidence experience of foster care and/or family placement work.
The independent assessors will adopt a wholly objective approach and concentrate on whether the applicants meet the standards required by Fairways Care. They will not be involved in the recruitment procedure of our agency and therefore will not be influenced in any way to do anything other than carry out the assessment they are contracted to do.
The independent assessors will have received training on the assessment process and will be knowledgeable on how offenders against children operate and the signs, which should be looked out for.
